The word comes from the Italian influenza (meaning influence) as it was believed that epidemics of this acute infectious disease were due to the influence of the stars.
They are now known to be caused by the influenza virus and they are of three types: A, B and C.
The infection is highly contagious, generally occurs in winter and may cause epidemics. Influenza is usually transmitted by droplet inhalation from sneezing and coughing.
After an incubation period of 1-3 days, the beginning attack is abrupt, with high fever, shivering, headache, sore throut and dry cough.
The symptoms usually ease after 3-4 days, some tiredness and depression remaining for a few days longer. Complications may occur in the elderly and those with chronic lung or heart disease; they include pneumonia, coma, heart failure and sudden death.
General measures such as bed rest, fluids and aspirin are usually prescribed.
